The Role a Renewable Energy Specialist Plays

The growing apprehension over issues of climate change heightens the need for a renewable energy specialist.

Renewable energy as the terms suggests, are natural sources of energy that are by nature, renewable. This classification includes the sun, wind, geothermal heat and similar other sources.

To date, renewable energy is seen as a viable solution in addressing the issue of climate change especially since the latter is viewed by experts as an occurrence brought about directly or indirectly by human activity.

The primary role of a renewable energy specialist therefore, is to study and assess renewable energy technologies and installation projects. This presupposes technical as well as professional knowledge on the subject matter thus a Master’s degree in an energy-related engineering course such as Electrical/Power Engineering is required.

Apart from said technical knowledge, said energy specialist must also be abreast with the latest issues concerning climate change, current solutions being implemented to address it and technological developments related to it. He must likewise possess excellent oral and written communication skills in order to communicate well information gathered about climate change to international organizations such as the World Bank. Also, he must be able to explain clearly the important role that renewable energy plays in resolving climate change issues.

Another characteristic required from said energy specialist is the ability to work effectively with a team. Successful results in this highly specialized field indeed require a collaboration of geniuses with quite analytical minds. Intelligence Quotient (IQ) is not sufficient though, emotional quotient (EQ) plays an equally important role in maintaining a harmonious relationship within the team. A specialist who is a good team player will recognize this need at the onset.

Still another important characteristic is the quality of experience in the operation of various technologies in harnessing renewable energy sources. This quality is often measured by the length of experience and the track record in the aspect of practical application.

The length of experience shows to an extent, the specialist’s mastery of the craft; while the track record on the other hand, proves his ability to apply the technical knowledge he possesses.

In some companies nowadays, said specialist is also expected to market effectively the renewable energy technologies he handles; thus, strengthening the need to possess good communication skills.

Indeed, the position of a renewable energy specialist is a job brought about by changes in the global environment that used to be unheard of. As these changes continue to unfold in the near future, the job evolves accordingly. Therefore, it is advisable for said specialist to remain open to future challenges that lie in wait.
